18 commentsWhy do Mormon (LDS) facilities look so good?
I am a member of the International Facilities Managers Association (IFMA). This organization has nearly 20,000 members worldwide. Being a member of this trade association, I also have the opportunity to join other groups for members only. One such group is a Community of Practice for Religious Facilities. This is a new community for IFMA and as such had a kick off webinar the other day that I attended. When I logged in, I was very surprised to find that the person leading the webinar was a Facilities Manager for the LDS (Latter-day Saints, i.e.Mormons). Being an evangelical, I would not have placed them in the category of “religious facilities”, but that was not the case for IFMA…which I understand given their paradigm.

4 commentsThe Acts 6:1-7 Principle
I am really blessed to have a great accountability partner. Ron is an older brother who is about 15-16 years my elder. He is not only an excellent Christian example, he is a very successful businessman and accomplished musician. Ron and I meet every week to study the scripture and to share our “lives” together as well as hold each other accountable. Most recently we have been studying the book of Acts. I hate to admit this, but this is the first time in my life that I have done an extensive study in this part of the scriptures. I am embarrassed that I have not spent more time studying God’s word and really trying to apply it to my life. Thanks Ron for helping me with this journey.

6 commentsTo “IPD” or not…that is the question (I think)
I am no Shakespeare
..but this is a topic that I think deserves some additional dialog and discussion…so, I am witting this more to gain your insights than as an informational post. The concept of IPD (Integrated Project Delivery for those of you not actively involved in the design and construction disciplines) is not brand new, but is getting a great deal more “play” since the AIA (American Institute of Architects) began to adopt and actually perpetuate the concept of IPD. Now, I know that many of you are not going to agree with all that I am going to comment on, and frankly, that is great. This topic is far from having any consensus or unanimity…far from it. Like any new idea or concept or methodology, your past and current paradigms will shape the lens from which you look at this subject…which makes this discussion all the more interesting to me. - 11 Aug

2 commentsWhat is the Outlook for Church Development Projects?
It should be no surprise that I have continued interest in the church development industry. After spending the past 23 years serving the development needs of churches, I have a deep passion and interest in the development of the right ministry space for churches. Heck, most of my best friends are in that industry.
SO…I decided to conduct a very scientific survey as to the status of church expansion, building and development projects. What is happening? Are churches still building? Are churches still designing projects? Are they doing capital stewardship campaigns?

No commentsLegalism
As a member of Elevation Church in Charlotte, we are exposed to some excellent teaching as a family…that is relevant to all 5 of us.
Last weeks teaching was the best I have heard regarding legalism. It was the end of a series called “Cow Tipping”.
This is a great download to listen to or to watch on line…take the time to listen/watch.

1 commentHighlights from TRIBES
I have really enjoined Tribes by Seth Godin
There are a lot of insights I have gleaned and am trying to absorb…and hopefully apply…that I think will be useful for me, our team and our clients….maybe you as well.
Here are some of the most interesting things to me….these are all quotes form the book
A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea
You can’t have a tribe without a leader – and you can’t be a leader without a tribe.

1 commentI want to be a HERETIC
What is a “Heretic”? According to Dictionary.com, it is:
1. A professed believer who maintains religious opinions contrary to those accepted by his or her church or rejects doctrines prescribed by that church.
2. Roman Catholic Church. a baptized Roman Catholic who willfully and persistently rejects any article of faith.
3. Anyone who does not conform to an established attitude, doctrine, or principle. - 5 Aug

No commentsHave I become a Seth Godin Groupie
I was doodling around on our website and updating links and our book lists when I had to stop and laugh at myself. I have become a groupie of Seth Godin. What has happened to me…a groupie of anything….OUCH. But I must admit that his books speak to me. They are short (which I really like) and he deals with topics that are meaningful, real life oriented and are in short snippets that I can grasp and apply…what a concept. Reading things that I can understand and apply…how novel.

7 commentsPreventive Maintenance is not Rocket Science
As I have studied the Facilities Management field and have researched the cause and effect of the decay of everything that we build, I am more confused as to why we, as God’s stewards, do such a poor job of fulfilling those duties. We would rather put off today what we can go into debt for tomorrow. HMMM….is that good stewardship? Sounds like many government officials.

I recently was introduced to Kevin Folsom, Director of Facilities and Plant Operations Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Texas (http://facilityportfolios.googlepages.com/home) He wrote a White Paper entitled “sustainable facilities” vs. Sustainable Facilities. This is an excellent article and frankly some of it is over my head….Kevin is one smart dude!!!!
