I know a guy….or “we have a guy…”

How many times have you hear a church leader say, “I know a guy who can X” or “we have a guy…”?  I was recently talking to my friend Michael Trent (The Third Place guys…you know…pink shirt and spiked hair….love ya man!!!) and he had this great idea of compiling a list of the stories that many of us have heard and actually lived over the years about “the guy”.ist2 2903142 jack of all trades 200x156 I know a guy....or we have a guy...

This might be “the guy” who:

1. Can get work donated at our church

2. That works in the coffee department at the grocery store and thinks he can run our Third Place

3. Works at Radio Shack and will be our sound system installer

4. Is an architect that designs warehouses…so how different is a church building

5. Builds homes…so he will save us money on our church construction project.

6. Has served on the United Way fund raising team…so he will run an internal capital campaign.

7. Is a retired “something” so we will turn the project over to him

8. Was a business owner so he will make a great elder in the church.

The list is can be exhaustive (and exhausting…if you have ever lived this)

So…what do we need from you?  We need your stories.  We need the details of your “that guy” experience.

We would ask that you either post your story on the Comments section of the blog…of send it to me direct at tim@coolsolutionsgroup.com

Let’s hear from you…this will be fun…and it might actually help other ministry leaders from making some of the same mistakes.

I’m often called in to do Cafe Rehab and it typically takes place on a project that has been open for a long time — but there was one time, not so long ago, that I did Rehab on a project before it ever opened. The two years before this point I told them exactly what they needed to do and wrote it down …… before agreeing to help with the Rehab – I did what any good counselor in Rehab would do – I made them admit they had a problem …… it’s a great first step.
