dirty condenser coil.6795731 std 200x150 Study Reveals HVAC Coil Cleaning Saves Energy!Recently, a ground breaking study was presented by ASHRAE on the benefits of coil cleaning on energy costs.  Until now, little actual testing data existed to prove this point.  As a result, building managers have often ignored devoting part of their budget to such maintenance.

The owners and managers of 1500 Broadway in NYC donated their building to this study to see what impact a dramatic change in coil cleaning nature and frequency might have.  A total of 4 air handlers provide heating and air to the building’s 34 floors of tenants.  The results of the study were astounding:

  • The cleaning of one air handler will lead to energy savings of up to $40,000 (the coil was 30 years old, and their last cleaning was one year ago, so the coil was dirty.)
  • The same restoration resulted in a 14% decrease in the pressure drop across the coil, resulting in increased airflow and that much more work in the form of cooling.
  • The restoration also resulted in an increase of 19 – 22 tons of added cooling capacity.  (An estimated 100 tons of cooling capacity will be added once all four air handlers are restored in a similar manner.)

These and many more energy-saving results were discovered during the course of this study.

The bottom line conclusion was this:  Good maintenance and operation practices, including coil and air duct cleaning, can significantly improve energy efficiency and Indoor Air Quality performance of the HVAC systems in your facility…and who doesn’t want that?
