Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year. There are no expectations of gifts or pomp or dress codes or other conditions. The only real expectation is a great dinner…and even it can have a variety of forms, menus and times. The only other possible prerequisite is F & F (family and football).
As I have been thinking about this coming week I have many things to be thankful for as I am sure you do as well…even in this time of tough economic conditions. For one, my bride and I are celebrating 25 years of marriage..WOW…I still think I am 25…now I have been married for 25 years…dang…I guess that means Lisa is getting old (SHHH don’t tell her I said that).
Many of you know that I have a tendency to get hung up on words and how they are used. I have always had a mental block with words that feel like they are too “religious” sounding or others that we throw around and expect everyone to know whatwe mean or we take the meaning for granted or we use them to make us sound smart (yeah, right).
Thanksgiving and Thankful are words that I think we take too lightly. What does “thankful” really mean? What does it mean to be thankful? Does that mean we are happy with an event or a possession or the outcome of some action? This has made me start to question my own understand. Am I thank-full…full of thanks? If so, how am I living that? When I celebrate thanksgiving…am I giving thanks or just using words I am expected to use to sound thankful? HMMM
I want to live a life that is embodied by thank-full-giving…a life of generosity of my time, experiences, skills, talents, possessions, resources, etc. What does that look like for you? Are you giving…thanks and otherwise? Are you “full” of thanks even when things are tough?
Philippians 4:4-6 - Rejoice in the Lord Always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
