I am thrilled to share this weeks post with you. It was written by Steve Caton, part of the leadership team at Church Community Builder. Have you ever met someone that you know immediately that they “get it”? Well…that is Steve. He get’s it spiritually…professionally…emotionally and has a real passion for the church. In addition, he is a heck of a lot of fun to hang with.
This guest blog by Steve is a real life story that I am sure is far too often the case and not the exception.

This year I have committed to read through the Bible. I am using the YOU VERSION app from Life Church on my tablet (android tablet that is). I have not missed a day and am embarrassed to admit how much I did not know was in the Bible. Kind of a sad commentary about my diligence in Bible reading.
Well, this week I was reading the chapters in my “plan” which included Numbers chapters 2 and 3. I was clicking away…reading diligently, then I came to Numbers 3: 14-38. I had never seen this before. Take a minute and read this section HERE…I will wait.

If you are not a Facility Manager, you may not be familiar with the term “CMMS”. So as we get started, lets make sure we have a good definition. According to Wikipedia:
“Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). A CMMS software package maintains a computer database of information about an organization’s maintenance operations. This information is intended to help Management and maintenance workers do their jobs more effectively. For example, determining which equipment requires servicing/work, plan preventive maintenance and to help management make informed decisions.”

Last week we posted a blog entitled 4 Ways Most Churches Select Church Management Software. It received a lot of comments and feedback which is great…thanks all.
One response in general lead me to connecting with a very smart guy from a church in Toronto (I love the way that the internet allows you to meet some many REALLY cool and smart people).

If you are involved with the administration, IT or some aspect of the support/business side of a church, you most likely have had some experience with what is affectionately called ChMS (aka – Church Management Software). Before launching Cool Solutions Group, I had no idea the number of companies, options, features and price points available for churches to sort through.
There are some great resources in the market to assist you identify the many options that are available. Two of the best sources are:

For the past few years we have seen lots of churches take advantage of the vacancy rates in many of the country’s lagging real estate markets. The exit of Circuit City, Linens ‘n Things and Block Buster, the relocation of Wal-Mart to make way for the SUPER STORE, the downsizing of many car dealerships and the closing of other large retails facilities has left the real estate landscape cluttered with an abundance of empty “big box” spaces.

Over the past several years I have been introduced to some very smart people involved in the facility management field. I have gleaned so much from these people who have far more experience than me and are frankly, much smarter. People like Kevin Folsom, the Facility Manager at Dallas Theological Seminary, and Michel Theriault, RPA, LEED AP (better known as the FM Advisor). Check out his BLOG and sign up for his regular posts…he has some great stuff…even if he is from the “Great White North” (Hows it going, Eh? LOL).

Last week our blog post entitled Beyond the Price Tag – How do we make buying decisions got some great feedback from readers. I thought that 2 in particular should be shared:
1. From a church software provider: “So many times decisions are made based on price instead of functionality. I have seen it go both ways. One way is that the product was cheaper than the rest but offered just as many features and functionality as the over priced software. And the other way where the higher priced one offers more than the cheaper one that would not help the organization accomplish what they are trying to do. It is important to find out what you really want to do and need. I recommend reading the ROI blog that our president did. http://iconcmo.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/roi-for-church-software-iconcm/”

A few months ago we announced the release of an online giving product called ministrEgive. It seemed to be the right decision given the competencies of part of our team and the fact that part of the Cool Solutions Group ownership team also owned a Payment Processing company (predominately serving the day care and education markets). So…why not get in the online payment space. The code was written…all we needed was to provide a new wrapper and branding…presto – ministrEgive.
